To whomever may have an interest:
The recent change in practice times/days for the up and coming swim session has me a bit concerned. I first want to state that I was planning to have my children take the session off before the changes occurred, but intend to have them resume again in the spring. I therefore feel that expressing my opinion now to be relevant.
I have been the parent of two NSSC swimmers for the last three years. I have coached children in both wrestling and soccer. And I myself was in competitive sports into my college years. While this qualifies me for nothing, I do have an opinion.
I like the current schedule. —A lot!
—My children don’t swim more than 2 days in a row, giving them time to recover both mentally and physically. I try to have my kids at each evening practice and use sat. mornings as a make-up, or an extra practice when preparing for a meet. I have found that the effort and concentration of this age group falls off if not given some time off every two days or so.
—My children have homework and need a good night’s sleep. Sunday’s practice gets them home by 8:00pm, with only Tues. and Thurs. becoming late school nights. They also have Mon. and Wed. evenings to catch up on schoolwork, see their parents, pursue other interest, or just play. Lakewood elementary doesn’t let out until 4:00pm, so on swim nights my children only have about 1.5 hours to do their homework and eat. Since we don’t get home from practice until 9:00, their bedtime, four straight nights would be overwhelming. Other interest such as Girl/Boy scouts, music, and other activities will be almost impossible to fit in with next session’s schedule.
—The summer schedule was Mon.-Fri. from 4:00-6:00pm until Fri. was dropped this past summer. While I understand that it is inconvenient for some parents, it was great for us. My children practiced Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri., again never more than two days in a row. Days and evenings were free for other activities or camps and they usually swam during the heat of the day. With last summers “Friday Fun Day”, they got to do some fun activities, but 9:00am can be challenging.
My over-all concerns are that my children will not be able to participate with NSSC should the spring or summer schedules change and those parents who share my views may not even join the club. It appears that the “Minnie” numbers are starting to finally increase and I personally would like to see this continue. NSSC is a first rate club, and the coaching staff has much to offer. I realize there are many factors that dictate the practice schedule. I just felt that I had to voice mine.
